Welcome to NYWC’s Ten Under 10 Writing Series, featuring the poetry of members of our youth writing workshops under the age of 10. Today’s selection reminds us of the beauty of weekends — and escaping your boss.
The Boss: A Play
By Mariah Pringle, Age 9
BOSS: I am the boss, so listen up! Work is not to have parties, it is to work. Every time there is a party, baby shower or whatever, everyone has to have a party if you turn 20, 50 or 100. Why do you have to?
ALL THE CO-WORKERS: (frightened) A party.
BOSS: From now till ya dead, NO MORE PARTIES!
ONE OF THE CO-WORKERS: Well boss, guess you don’t want the 50th birthday surprise we were planning for you…
BOSS: Maybe one more and that’s that!
Today’s poem was contributed in 2006 by Mariah Pringle when she was nine years old and appears in Making the Trees Shiver: An Anthology of the First Six Years of the Fort Greene Summer Literary Festival. You’ll find this and other poems from the Fort Greene Summer Literary Festival in the NYWC Bookstore.

NYWC’s Ten Under 10 Writing Series is a virtual event for 10 Days of NYWC.
Help NYWC raise as many $10 donations as possible October 22-31 during 10 Days of NYWC and compete to win some great prizes! If we raise $10,000 or more during the 10 Days of NYWC, every dollar raised will be matched by an anonymous family foundation, so please help us exceed this goal to turn $10,000 into over $20,000! Every donation counts, and you can participate in a few ways.
