This past Sunday at the Atlantic Antic Street Festival, people were celebrating many aspects of arts and culture. In the light of the newly open Barclays Center, many booths were set up with original artwork for sale by local artists, non-profit organizations letting people know about social services, and live bands from all genres of music playing for free amongst a variety of local restaurant food for sale.

In the midst of all the enjoyment, there are also some serious people attending. One such group is the Guardian Angels.  They can be found at many such events as their goal is public safety. Each safety patrol chapter of Guardian Angels volunteers safeguard streets, subways and other public areas. From dusk until dawn, without weapons, these committed volunteers help to ensure that citizens can enjoy their communities without fearing for their safety. This community –based approach garners much more public respect than the NYPD unethical stop and frisk policy. As it also has programs for youth participation, I feel the Guardian Angels are a better alternative to keeping our communities safe for the future.
