Come support NYWC Writers Najaya and Tema at Poet-Linc and Girls Write Now!

Two of our most prolific young writers, Najaya Royal and Tema Regist, are participating in Poet-Linc this year. Poet-Linc is a poetry slam contest geared towards young writers from all five boroughs.

These young artists will be reading their work for five consecutive Wednesdays at Lincoln Center and consists of three rounds of competition to be judged by officials and audience members. The competition builds up to a grand slam reading on December 13th where Lincoln Center’s first ever Grand Slam Champion will be determined. Poet-Linc is co-sponsored with Girls Write Now, a mentoring organization that works with young women writers in public schools throughout the city. Girls Write Now pairs these young writers with professional women writers who provide insight and guidance to their mentees. The mission of the organization is to strengthen and encourage the voices of young women who have been marginalized and left unheard. Appropriately, the theme of Poet-Linc’s poetry slam is ‘ I have a voice’ and its competitors will be showcasing theirs throughout December.

Both Najaya and Tema have written with NWYC for years. They have read in five consecutive Fort Greene Park Summer Literary Festival events, as well as had their work featured in a number of our own publications which include The Hidden Chorus and Making the Trees Shiver. Najaya and Tema are set to read tomorrow evening;  come show your support for our two talented writers whom we are so excited and proud to see use their voices and perform their work!
