The Upside of Survival Book Launch Showcases Workshop Talent

Monday marked the launch of NYWC’s newest publication, The Upside of Survival. Writing for this chapbook came from our workshop with the CenterLight Adult Day Health Care Program in Crown Heights, Brooklyn lead by workshop leader Kimberly Shelby-Szyszko. The book includes poetry, prose, and illustrations collected over the course of a year from the ten workshop participants. On Monday these writers had the chance to read their work alongside their peers at the day center. The reading had a huge turnout, with writers reading their work multiple times as well as friends and staff members excitedly flipping through the chapbook.

The reading also marked a transition in workshop leaders. Starting next Monday, the workshop will transfer leadership from Kimberly to Beth Freidland, who was also present at the reading to meet the participants. Not only were the current members excited for the continuation of the workshop, others at the day center were eager to join the writing group and possibly see their work in print just like their peers. The reading was a big hit that increased awareness and interest of the Monday workshop!
