Orcs, Hobbits and Dragons

Lo Hobbit- Un Viaggio inaspettato- Wikipedia

A torrent rain of black and silver metal plummets into the massive army of humanoid-beast, a great rush of screams, cries and roars pierce the night air. Thousands and thousands of blood-thirsty Orcs flood the slopes of the foothills, warring against the dwarves of the mountain. The short bearded-combatants battle back against the monstrosities with their mighty-hammers and razor-sharp axes. The Fantasy genre is one of my favorites and like many fans of the writing and film style; I love J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth. Tolkien’s fantasy world is filled with all types of creatures, some malicious and evil and others brave and heroic.

I discovered Tolkien’s wonderful novels only a couple of years before Peter Jackson’s award-winning “Lord of the Rings” trilogy hit the movie theater.  Once I read the books, I was instantaneously hooked and searched for everything dwarf or hobbit related. Personally, I couldn’t wait to see “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,”which in my humble opinion far surpassed the first film in the trilogy.

In my opinion, Tolkien is the “father” of high fantasy. His novels were not just filled with amazing tales of overcoming great adversity, but a living and breathing world. In the appendices of the final novel in the trilogy, “The Return of the King,” Tolkien provided an entire history for Middle-Earth including, languages, family trees and religion for all of the races of his mythos.

Write a history for your very own fantasy world. Create adventurous protagonists and despicable villains. Is your main character an elf, dwarf, orc , hobbit, or human? Just write and let your imagination be your guide.
