the box that rocks

The Box That Rocks: 30 years of Video Music Box and the Rise of Hip Hop Music and Culture is a new exhibition at MoCADA featuring remembrance of the pioneer music show featuring original hip hop artists before MTV and VH1. The opening reception on Saturday night was attended by many members of the community including creator Ralph McDaniels and State Senator Kevin Parker. Laurie Cumbo, the director of MoCADA, gave an inspiring speech about the legacy of hip-hop and the importance of its voice in speaking out about social injustice. Coming on the heels of Biggie Smalls’ death anniversary March 9th, I thought looking at the photos may inspire some of your own writing.
